After the recent heavy rains the hills of Gippsland are green and the roads uncrowded. The dairy cattle look happy and after the downpours the locals are smiling. There’s an iconic country pub at Meeniyan that’s been around since the 1930s, great gastro pub-style meals featuring local produce as well as a palatable wine list and an ample selection of the frothy stuff (navigators only). Following lunch take a walk around town and explore the main street with its shops and galleries. For those with a bit of time take the short run down to Fish Creek and travel home the long way. A more direct route back to Melbourne may involve a coffee stop and a short exploration of the picturesque villages of Koonwarra or Loch on the South Gippsland Highway.
